We don't usually associate composting with an indoors activity, however, it does make sense. When you think of the numbers of people living on small urban blocks, people living in high rise and people with limited mobility it does make sense to compost indoors and it can be done very effectively efficiently.
Read on to see how easy it is to create and carry on a system of composting indoors. One of the most common forms of indoor composting is Vermicomposting
Worms transform household scraps into a wonderful soil conditioner rich in nutrients. This is perfectas an addition to potting mixes and indoor plants. The worms used in worm farms are called Red Wigglers. These worms are not the common garden variety worm, however they are available for purchase online and in stores.
Worm factories are available commercially and are very easy to use. Worm composting is an ideal way to introduce children to composting. For not too much effort but a cost savings why not have a go at making your own worm farm. It could be an ideal way to begin learning about the method.
Of the two methods, my personal preference is for the commercially available worm farm as they are very easy to maintain. Here are some do's and don'ts to have success with worm composting.
Don't use meat or dairy items, use fruit and vegetable scraps.
Do use vacuum cleaner dust, coffee grounds and tea leaves.
If the worm factory dries out , spray it with water, but do not allow to become water-logged.
In cold weather, remember to feed the worms.
Fruit flies can be satisfactorily controlled by covering the top layer with a piece of old carpet
Keep the lid on to keep away flies
To discourage ants climbing up the legs of the worm factory put the legs in small containers of water.
A commercial worm farm is supplied with a spigot from where the juice can be collected. The juice is a very good liquid fertilizer and just needs to be diluted with water.
Worm Farming is a fantastic form of composting, and it is really simple to enjoy the rewards with minimal effort.
Another form of composting uses a compost pail or bucket. Generally speaking people will use any container, add kitchen scraps and then add to the compost pile when it is full. This is exactly what to do however the bin can become smelly whereas a purpose made compost bin is created to work, because they have filtration, in most cases carbon or coal, which minimizes the smell.
Filters can be simply changed. Once filled, the ingredients of the compost pail are ideal for adding to the worm factory.
Bokashi Composting is an additional way to compost indoors.Bokashi is a form of anaerobic composting, which means it is composting without oxygen. The scraps are to a bucket in the normal manner however the scraps are layered with EM Bokashi. EM means effective microorganisms and it is these microorganisms that help with the composting or in this case, fermenting procedure.
In contrast to various other forms of composting, it is completely satisfactory to include meat and dairy products. Bokashi composting reduces the amount of food waste from a household, significantly.
A Bokashi container is also fitted with a spigot the same as a worm farm, so that the juice can be collected. When the bucket is full, the concoction is fermented for a couple of weeks. Once finished, the contents look almost the same, but they are completely fermented.
Some people add the Bokashi mix to a worm farm. This is especially efficient in winter when it is too cold to go outdoors. What a wonderful end product this is. As you can see there are choices when it comes to
indoor composting. Time to get started.
